In Santa Monica, plans are underway to turn a stretch of unused parking lot into a flower-sprouting promenade, giving us pedestrian-friendly change. However, City Hall officials are currently looking for a new restaurant to set up shop on the turf of the Palisades Garden Walk. Chez Jay, Ocean Avenue's character-packed 52-year-old bar and restaurant, just happens to be on the parcel of land where this new restaurant project aims to be erected, endangering one of the city's greatest and last remaining dive bars and a slice of Santa Monica history.

Main Squeeze is a sunny, two week old juice bar on Main Street in Santa Monica. It's less of a serious juice spot than, say, Moon Juice down the block on Rose, with its house-made chia pudding and coconut yogurt, instead Main Squeeze outsources foodstuffs like raw oatmeal, veggie sandwiches, and sells the usual selection of bars, kale chips, and granola as offered by Whole Foods.

The worst-kept secret at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach is that the gym is closing its doors for good when its lease expires on June 30, 2014. With its 45 years of history, this Los Angeles landmark was once the second most popular tourist attraction in the LA area after Disneyland. But according to former Gold’s Gym Venice owner Ed Connors, Google has bought the building and the surrounding real estate, with grand designs on walling off the streets and creating a SoCal campus to rival its Mountain View ‘university’.

The Yahoo Center office park in eastern Santa Monica is dropping Yahoo from its name under mysterious circumstances. Owners Equity Office say they're simply rebranding the campus and renaming it the Colorado Center (the fourth name change in 20 years). But an unnamed member of the Santa Monica Business Alliance said that Yahoo no longer rents enough square feet to have its name on the building--the internet company has fallen on hard times and gave up some SaMo space.
