www.greentechmedia.com - After years of contention, the Los Angeles City Council has granted the city’s utility, the biggest municipal utility in the U.S., the power to enter into contracts with solar power producers at above retail rates. Like a similar program proposed by LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in 2008, the contracts pre-approved by the City Council allow the DWP to purchase the electricity fed into the utility’s grid by solar system owners over a pre-designated number of years.

Grant program brings free solar panels to East L.A. homes

www.scpr.org - During a time when the use of solar energy in America is at an all-time high, a new community development program has retrofitted nearly 90 homes in East L.A. with solar panels, attic insulation and a tankless water heater. The Community Development Block Grant program provided the upgrades for free to single-family homes with an income of less than $67,000 in the L.A. County’s 1st District. The panels are expected to eliminate 1200 tons of greenhouse gas emissions over their 30-year lifespan.
