Palisadian Amy Katch has done something that perhaps only those with "spidey sense" might try to accomplish over the weekend. Katch rappelled 27 stories down theWit Hotel at the corner of State and Lake Street in Chicago during the May 5-6 weekend.

No, Katch wasn't out to nab the bad guys by swinging from building to building. She was one of 90 people who hovered 278 feet above the pavement for the "Skyline Plunge!," a fundraiser for the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago.

According to a press release, many of the participants rappel for the thrill of scaling tall buildings. However, there are some who participate in memory of a loved one, or to honor someone affected by lung disease.

The group raised over $120,000 for lung disease research and programs.

There will be another Skyline Plunge! on September 8 and 9.

Motorists should be braced for brief road closures, but bicycle racing fans will have an up-close look for three days next Friday and Saturday when the Amgen Tour of California bike race winds through the mountains of Los Angeles County and finishes Sunday on the streets of Beverly Hills, Hollywood and downtown L.A.

On Sunday, some L.A. streets may be thronged with fans, but road closures will not be lengthy as the bike race passes any given spot relatively quickly, organizers said. Events at Sunday's finish line, at L.A. Live, are slated to wrap up by 1 p.m.

Sunday's race will start on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, then wind down the Sunset Strip into Hollywood. The bike race will follow the L.A. Marathon route — but backwards — towards Dodger Stadium and downtown.

The race will zigzag south past City Hall, past the Biltmore Hotel, then head up Bunker Hill to Walt Disney Hall. A final downhill sprint will lead to the finish line at Staples Center.

In Hollywood, this means all lanes of Hollywood Boulevard, between Orange Drive and the 101 Freeway, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. (See the 2012 Amgen Tour Route in Los Angeles)

The nine-day bike race started Sunday in Santa Rosa, 50 miles north of San Francisco. Various legs of the race will be held in Central California, and a time trial was will be held on a circuit in Bakersfield next Thursday.

But Friday and Saturday is when the race will see several steep mountain segments, first on Saturday from Palmdale to Wrightwood and Big Bear Lake, then on Sunday from Ontario up to Mount Baldy Village, west through the rugged mountains and down to Azusa, and capped by a second steep dash up the switchback road to Mount Baldy Ski Area.

On Friday, the bike race will start in Palmdale, and use Sierra Highway south through the suburbs onto the Angeles Forest Highway. The course then forks east on Mount Emma Road, and winds through the mountains and back to the desert floor on Fort Tejon Road.

Racers will then make a major climb up Big Pines Highway to the Mountain High Ski Area, a 6,000-foot increase in altitude. After riding downhill on Highway 2 through Wrightwood, the bike racers will head east on state Route 138 to cross over Interstate 15 at Cajon Pass.

The Friday race course then continues east on routes 138 and 18 to Crestline and Lake Arrowhead, then uses Route 18 east to Big Bear Lake. racers will circle Big Bear Lake on the north and east sides, before finishing the day at the Snow Summit Ski Area.

On Saturday, racers will start in Ontario, head up steep Mount Baldy Road, then fork west on Glendora Ridge Road. After returning to the flatlands at Azusa, racers will head east back to the bottom of Mount Baldy Road, then head north to that day's finish line at the top of the switchbacks at the Mount Baldy Ski Area.

From MuscleWeek via Michael Z:

The worst-kept secret at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach is that the gym is closing its doors for good when its lease expires on June 30, 2014. With its 45 years of history, this Los Angeles landmark was once the second most popular tourist attraction in the LA area after Disneyland, but alas, times have changed and the ‘Mecca of Bodybuilding’ is slowly transforming into the Mecca of Millionaires, or ‘Silicon Beach’ in techno-blog-speak.

According to former Gold’s Gym Venice owner Ed Connors, Google has bought the building and the surrounding real estate, with grand designs on walling off the streets and creating a SoCal campus to rival its Mountain View ‘university’. If this is accurate, Gold’s Gym appears to have dropped the ball, and with undeveloped real estate (and mandatory) in the area in short supply, the death of Gold’s Venice is but a foregone conclusion.

The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Santa Monica Bike Center as a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB). With the announcement of 67 new BFBs today, Santa Monica Bike Center joins a visionary group of more than 400 local businesses, government agencies and Fortune 500 companies across the United States that are transforming the American workplace. The Santa Monica Bike Center was created by the City of Santa Monica, with funding from METRO, to support and encourage people to ride bicycles in the City, especially to commute, connect to regional transit and the Exposition Light Rail, now under construction.
“Santa Monica Bike Center is at the forefront of a movement to make American businesses more competitive, sustainable and attractive to the best and brightest employees,” said Andy Clarke, President of the League of American Bicyclists. “An investment in bicycling enhances employee health, increases sustainability and improves the bottom line.”
Bicycle-friendly businesses improve the workplace and contribute to the community and improve their overall earnings. Santa Monica Bike Center encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as secure, indoor bicycle parking, lockers, showers, bike repair, commuter incentives and bike education programs.
“We are proud to be the first business in Santa Monica to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business,” said Santa Monica Bike Center General Manager, Ron Durgin. “The Bike Center is committed to promoting bicycling as a healthy, efficient and cost effective mode for daily trips and we hope our BFB Silver Award will inspire other businesses in the community to become more bicycle friendly.”
“The Santa Monica Bike Center was created to promote and encourage bicycling,” according to Lucy Dyke, Deputy Director for Special Projects for the City of Santa Monica. “It’s the largest facility of its kind in the country, and it offers programs, services and secure parking to residents, visitors and people who work in Santa Monica. We have had a very positive response from the community since it opened last November.”
Moving forward, Santa Monica Bike Center will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. The Bike Center will also provide technical assistance to Santa Monica businesses interested in applying for recognition as a BFB.

The city of Santa Monica is hosting a grand opening opening of what is being called the Santa Monica Bike Campus this Sunday as part of April 22nd Earth Day activities. This bike campus facility is on a linear strip of what was no longer actively used roadway connecting to parking lots just east of the beach bike path at Ocean Park Boulevard. The pavement is now painted with various markings for teaching bike education classes. There are simulated lanes, sharrows, crosswalks and bike lanes for teaching lane positioning, as well as some designs for bike handling tests that are part of the League of American Bicycling’s “Smart Cycling” course material.

In years past the campus idea had been met with indifference, but with the passage of Santa Monica’s Bike Action Plan, a dedicated bike education space is finally a reality.

The facility is meant to provide a dedicated space for local LCI (League Certified Instructors), and area schools to teach bike safety principles in a safe space before working up to lessons involving live traffic. Setting aside such a space in Santa Monica was a longtime vision of Ron Durgin the general manager of the Santa Monica Bike Center and an LCI instructor himself. Durgin has taught bike safety classes for the City of West Hollywood and teaches classes in Santa Monica along with other instructors recently certified in the area.

The local LACBC chapter, Santa Monica Spoke, has also been advocating for the SMPD to provide a bike education diversion program (such as the one in Portland, OR and more locally in Huntington Beach) for bicyclists cited for moving violations. In such programs a traffic safety class is offered as a cheaper alternative to more stringent fees, and connects those committing violations with actual traffic instruction instead of just a brief moment in court. If such a diversion program is developed, this bike campus would likely become the facility to host such classes.

The painted lines of the bike campus have been in place for sometime now, but additional educational sign boards are going up that provide information for online resources including videos. For the grand opening at 12:30pm on Sunday, mayor Richard Bloom will be making an appearance, which will be followed by free bike training from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. co-sponsored by Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District PTA Council, Santa Monica Bike Center and the City of Santa Monica.

This facility is a first for Los Angeles County, and marks a return to integrating bicycle traffic education into regular schooling; as well enhanced opportunities for instruction for adults looking to get back into riding, or improving their safe riding skills. The Santa Monica Bike Campus isn’t quite as elaborate as the “traffic gardens” used in the rigorous bike education programs of the Netherlands, but it’s a pretty good start, and one that makes good use of space that wasn’t getting much activity before. Now if only we can get the DMV to incorporate some real bike education into driving requirements, then we might really be on our way to safer interactions between drivers and bike riders.

Event Information:

In New York, there’s a tradition to do yearly transit races where a cyclist, a bus and a transit rider race from a common starting point to jobs in Manhattan. Streetfilms captured several of those races on films one of the more dramatic ones is above.

Now it’s our turn. Next Wednesday, eight days from now, we’re going to shoot our own transit race. Our race is going to cover the future Westside Bus Rapid Transit route on Wilshire Boulevard. We have a cyclist, a bus rider and a car driver all ready to go but we need both some volunteers to run cameras and someone to volunteer to walk the route as part of the race. If someone is really interested in being the bus rider, we can switch as right now I’m the bus rider in the race.

If you’re interested in volunteering, please email damien@streetsblog.org. The race begins at 5:00 P.M., but we’ll need you to get to the starting line a little earlier. We will provide further directions via email to those interested.

Attention to the fitness club's seaside location starts at the entrance. Aaron Richter, Equinox vice president of design, points out that the check-in desk is made of fiberglass. "An homage to surfing," he said.

The beachy vibe continues throughout the airy, 30,000-square-foot club -- Equinox's 13th in Southern California. Retractable glass doors in the cafe (think roll-up garage doors made of glass) open out to the patio, and there's driftwood-colored paneling on some walls, hand-carved stone reminiscent of waves on the walls outside the men's and women's dressing rooms and cross-cut bamboo flooring in the yoga studio. Instead of a conventional ceiling, the main exercise studio has a room-size skylight, which suffuses the room with light. The cardio and weight areas are flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows.

There's no hiding from the light -- or the knowledge that it's time to get ready for that swimsuit.

13455 Maxella Ave., Marina Del Rey. (310) 306-1000. Open 5:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 5:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Part rolling block party, part experiment in urban/social engineering, and all fun, Los Angeles' 4th CicLAvia in two years (the first being on 10/10/10) was better than ever.

Inspired by Ciclovía, the original, weekly street closure event in Bogotá, Colombia, CicLAvia semi-annually shuts down 10 miles of roadway to auto traffic, opening up the neighborhoods from Boyle Heights to Downtown, MacArthur Park to East Hollywood, El Pueblo/Olvera Street, and South LA to pedestrians and bikers.

Perfect weather and clear skies brought out tens of thousands of riders, strollers and skaters. In fact, today's turnout was the biggest I'd seen so far, with more activities than ever before. Participants could climb a rock wall at Hollenbeck Park, play bike polo downtown, listen to live music in Macarthur Park, buy a pinata on 9th Street and much, much more.

This was the first year I couldn't get my act together to get up early enough to ride to CicLAvia from Venice, so I decided to do something a little different this time around. Instead of trying to do the entire route, I concentrated on the South-Central and Boyle Heights CicLAvia "hubs", exploring what those neighborhoods had to offer.

Overall, I was really happy with my choice. Normally, these are the neighborhoods I tended to skip on my other CicLAvia rides, and based on the crowds today, it looks like I wasn't alone. While downtown LA was wall-to-wall bikes, with long lines for food trucks and other vendors, the vibe around South Central, 9th and Olympic and Hollenbeck Park was more relaxed, the food trucks less up-market, and the bikes a whole lot funkier.

Here then are some of my photos and impressions of the day (click on any photo to see a larger version.)
Mayor Villaraigosa was on hand in full bicycle regalia - earlier that morning he surprised many bike activists by announcing a permanent bike sharing program in Los Angeles starting in December. From LA Streets Blogs:

In an announcement that caught even some CicLAvia organizers by surprise, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced this morning at the “CicLAvia opening” that CicLAvia partners Bike Nation will establish a permanent footprint in Los Angeles this December. The cost to the city will be minimal, as Bike Nation promises to pay for all of the 4,000 bikes and 400 kiosks coming to Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Venice Beach and Westwood. Bike Nation estimates it could take a full year to complete the installation.

“In tough economic times like these, we knew it wasn’t feasible to start a public bike share program,” explains Villaraigosa of the $16 million investment by Bike Nation. ”But we know it’s what LA needs. As we’ve seen with CicLAvia and ‘Carmaheaven,’ Angelenos are aching for a day without a car.”

In Los Angeles, serious skateboarding is not just for tricksters. For many, these rolling planks are modes of transportation; for others, they’re a way to move a heavy load. Whatever the chosen practice for this inventive means of moving, Angelenos demand a diverse selection to fit the right bill — and to come off as groovy as possible in the process. Consider the following five best skateboarding shops to be found in Los Angeles.

Soul Skating LA
770 S. Boyle Ave.
Boyle Heights, CA 90023
(323) 266-6611
www.soulskaltingla.com

Hours: Mon to Thur – 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Fri – 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sat – 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sun – 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As the name suggests, this outfit is devoted to skateboarding culture in every sense, from running workshops to hosting events devoted to what has become a global athletic movement. As for the SK8 shop within Soul Skating LA, expect an alluring array of decks, accessories and art to equip customers ready to ride at nearby Hollenbeck Park Skate Plaza, only one block south of this full-service store, or in any of the other skate parks provided by the City of Angels.

Hours: Mon to Fri – 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sat – 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sun – 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This small shop frequented by locals and situated on the line that divides Silver Lake and Los Feliz has been around for generations as arguably the oldest of its type in Los Angeles. Beginners are welcome here where experienced customers often pitch in with suggestions, comparing notes with knowledgeable staff who have customers up and boarding in as much time as it takes to climb up the steep hill that fronts this skateboarder’s mecca. By the way, after that, the ride down to Hyperion Ave. is a breeze.

Non Factory
110 S San Pedro St
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 620-0314

Hours: Sun to Tues – 12 p.m. – 8 p.m., Wed to Sat – 12 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Non Factory staff live and breathe skateboarding so much so that their shop runs a team devoted to the sport. Beyond competing in local and regional competitions (many won by this particular team), these athletic folks who frequent this Little Tokyo outlet know this is the go-to place for hardware, wheels, longboards and, of course, short boards, as well as the latest in hipster skateboard garb, too. Buyers can expect expert service from this downtown haven that not only includes board and foot sizing for the best ride, but also helpful advice about which product is best for that customer’s particular needs.

Flocks of street boarders frequent Koreatown, so this area shop comes in handy for those rollers who not only depend on this spot for its convenience during a breakdown, but also when looking to restore or replace the ride of the moment. From start-up brands to the latest and greatest names out there, boards abound in this friendly outlet that even carries spray paint. The first event was held in 2010.

The event is intended to inspire people to get out of their cars, explore the city and burn a few calories at the same time.

Ten miles of city streets in and around downtown were blocked off as cyclists and pedestrians enjoyed music, food and a range of activities from rock climbing to dancing.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa also used the event to unveil a new $16-million, privately funded bike share program that aims to add 4,000 bicycles at 400 kiosks across the city.

The idea of shutting down part of a city to motor vehicles began as a weekly ciclovia (Spanish for “bike path”) event in Bogota, Colombia, almost four decades ago and was later adopted by several cities in Latin America and the United States.

ALSO:

Porn actor dead after clash with LAPD officers

Marines to train off Carpinteria for duty in Persian Gulf

Petty's stolen Rickenbacker one of band's many vintage instruments

-- Ari Bloomekatz

Photo: Mushu the dog rides in a backpack with owner Cristy Ibarra, 23, near the African American Firefighters Museum on Central Avenue on Sunday.
Hollenbeck Park at the eastern end of CicLAvia is one of the hottest spots on the map, but there are a lot of great CicLAvia activities on the Eastside.

Though Hollenbeck Park is the jumping off point for many people in the Eastside to experience CicLavia, there are organized bike rides starting out on the eastside, and parties in the street itself, and intersections that will be teeming with activities both on and off the route. At the park itself, CicLAvia has a merchandise booth and REI Los Angles hosts a rocking climbing wall. Whether starting at the park, joining a group ride, or just planning a day in the sun by yourself, the eastside has a lot to offer. Check it out:

Building Healthy Communities, Boyle Heights Ride and Party

Building Healthy Communities, Boyle Heights, hosts a youth ride that starts at 11:30 A.M. at the Weingart East YMCA at 2900 Whittier Boulevard. Families, youth, and members from Jovenes Inc., Inner City Struggle, Legacy LA, and Hollenbeck Police Activity League will all join the BHCBH contingent. The group will ride at a leisurely pace throughout the route, said Eric Hubbard, development director for Jovenes Inc.

The group plans to arrive at Hollenbeck Park between noon and 12:15 P.M. before they ride CicLAvia. Last year, more than 45 people rode with this group for CicLAvia, Hubbard said. Adult supervisors will be riding throughout the event coordinating the group, making sure everyone is safe and the groups stays together. “We’re trying to come together for the Boyle Heights Community,” said Hubbard. The group will ride until 3 P.M., and then return to the YMCA, where there will be a free quesadillas, chalking activities in the parking lot, and other community building activities.

Ovarian-Pscyo Bicycle Brigade adopts the 4th Street and Boyle Avenue intersection, offers free silk screening

Just hosting an intersection to manage the traffic of bicycles and pedestrians isn’t enough for the Oviarian-Psyco Bicycle Brigade. Ova core member Cinthia Garcia desinged an Ovarian-Psycos/Boyle Heights/CicLAvia image that will be silk screened for free at the intersection the group adopted for CicLAvia, 4th Street and Boyle Avenue. They will be playing music from a PA system, one of the members Xela de la X might perform her works of underground hip-hop. CicLAvia also provides a great opportunity to promote their all-female styled Critical Mass ride called Clitoral Mass.

DREAM Riders Contingent

Some of the DREAM riders that organized the DREAM Ride from Orange County to Los Angeles in February will meet at 10 A.M. at Hollenbeck Park to ride CicLAvia. This group has ridden in past CicLAvias to and show the connection the immigrant community has with cycling and exemplify the people that could be affected by the DREAM Act, a federal law that would allow undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship. The DREAM Riders have donned lucha libre masks, and installed PVC pipes on the back of their bikes with flags hanging off the poles with messages like “Sin Papers, y ke?” or “No papers, and what?” One of the groups founders and local resident Erick Huerta said he will be projecting music, specifically cumbia, from his backpack, and clanging his cowbell during the ride.

The 213 FB hikers, a recreational hiking group that focuses on wellness and healthy living, will be meeting at 9 A.M. at Metro Auto Service, on the Corner of 1st Street and State Street. The group, a majority of which are from Boyle Heights, plans to ride to Los Angeles City College, and then to the South Los Angeles hub. The 213 FB Hikers started in July as a hiking group that explores Griffith Park every Tuesday night at 7 P.M. and Saturday morning at 7:15 A.M. To learn more about the group click here.

4st Street bridge

It’s one of the main arteries that connects downtown Los Angeles to Boyle Heights and it provides one of the best views of Downtown. A mobile photo booth will be at the bridge taking profile photos of bicyclists and pedestrians.

1st street bike lane/Mariachi Plaza/Mariachi Festival

Though the CicLAvia route wasn’t able to extend to Mariachi Plaza at 1st Street, the adventurous pedestrian can head north on Boyle Avenue to check out the only other green striped bike lane in Los Angeles. The 21st annual Mariachi Festival will be going on at Mariachi Plaza from 11 A.M.-4 P.M. Cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz will serve as the master of ceremonies. Down the block, Primera Taza Coffee House will offer free conchita sweet bread with a purchase of a coffee. There are many restaurants that can be found on 1st Street, such as Placita del D.F. restaurant, where Huerta recommends the cemita and aguas frescas.

You know the feeling – the one that rises when you start humming the next song on your play list before it begins, or the sense of ho-hum as you’re half way through your “usual” run – basically, your body telling you that it’s time to switch it up.
Always looking for something new, when I heard about Revolution Fitness, I knew it was a one-stop chance to get my fix for several days.
Yes, I know you’ve heard of spinning and yoga. But Indo-Row, Core-Barre, and Rev 30/30 were all new to me. So, I tried them. All of them. And one after the other, for three days straight.
Indo-Row: Group “erg” sessions. Welcome back to crew workout 101, you jump on the contraption that after a few minutes renders you feeling like you’ve been running stairs and lifting weights at the same time. Great workout if you miss feeling your abs, the glute muscles you forgot about and the butt muscles you never knew you had. Add a reminisce of post-yoga zen from all the regulated breathing through your nose and mouth and walk out glowing in red-cheeked sweat.
Core-Barre: Equipped with yoga mats, weights, a foam ball, and some rubber bands, in a tiny room that looks fit for ballet you will perform strengthening exercises that will render you quivering. For days. Imagine squatting in a plié and then rising to your tip toes, punching the air after circular motions while holding weights, and various forms of crunches that burn in a 360 fire around your abdomen. Think pilates meets yoga, married with weight training.
Rev 30/30: Best of both worlds all in one class – imagine a class that starts with 30 minutes of cardio and end with 30 minutes of strength training. My dream come true, this is the vitamin version of a group class – every essential aspect of a workout you want, all in one hour. Plus, the spinning room is the widest and tallest you’ve ever been in, and the bikes the newest versions possible (at least, they’re the most up-to-date I’ve come across).
Revolution Fitness, however, doesn’t start and stop with the classes. The fellow clientele is local and friendly, the instructors are energetic, helpful, and absolutely talented, and, as I know what you care about (almost) the street parking is ample and (on side streets) free.
So, when you find yourself in need of a new song, a burst of motivation, or just the desire to feel a new muscle, be sure to check in to Revolution Fitness and sweat it out in a whole new way.

What: Indoor Fitness Studio
Cost: Single class, private training, and monthly passes available
Unique: In addition to classic Spinning, Yoga, and Pilates, Revolution Fitness also offers Indo-Row, Core-Barre, Rev 20/20/20, and Rev 30/30 classes

The unofficial grand opening for new bike corrals on Main Street was held Saturday, March 24, outside of Peet’s Coffee at 2439 Main Street.
Cynthia Rose, of Santa Monica Spoke, said a bike corral traditionally took up one car parking spot that was converted to park 10 to 14 bikes.
“These bike corrals are different in they utilize red buffer zones that were previously just red zones and not utilized for parking or anything at all,” Rose said. “The City has re-purposed them to provide parking for up to 36 customers to enjoy and engage on Main Street.”
Mayor Richard Bloom was on hand for the ribbon cutting on Saturday.
“Biking is just taking off exponentially,” Bloom said. “More and more people are biking everyday. It’s helping relieve traffic in the city, it’s great exercise, it’s providing people with another means to get around.”

A hiker was airlifted from the Temescal Gateway Park area Monday afternoon after suffering from an unknown illness, says the Los Angeles Fire Department.

According to LAFD spokesman Matt Spence, Fire Station 69 was on the scene and, with the assistance of a helicopter crew, transported the adult male hiker to a local hospital.

Spence did not have details on the nature of the hiker's illness. However, he warned that hikers should never head out on a demanding trail unless they are in good enough physical health to handle the terrain.

Spence also offered up the following safety tips:

Bring enough water.

Make sure you are healthy enough to hike, especially if you're hiking in the deep fire roads.

Be mindful of the wildlife you are sharing the area with, including snakes and coyotes.

Bring a cellphone when possible.

Let someone know you are hiking and what trails you may take.

Spence also mentioned that if you are hiking in a remote area, you may want to park your car in a visible location and leave a note inside. That way, if you get lost someone knows where you were headed.

Read an entire article from the LA Times here.

In the 1960s, Larry Stevenson’s Makaha skateboards helped merge surfing and skateboard cultures. He also publicized the activity as publisher of Surf Guide magazine.

Excerpts from the Times article say:

“Larry Stevenson, a Venice Beach lifeguard who helped popularize skateboarding in the early 1960s by marketing his Makaha boards to riders eager to essentially surf on land, has died. He was 81.

Stevenson, who hadParkinson’s disease, died Sunday at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, said his son, Curt.

“He was the guy who said, ‘I can merge surfing with the skateboard culture,’” said Michael Brooke, author of the 1999 skateboarding history “The Concrete Wave.” “At one point in time, there was nobody bigger making skateboards.”

From his lifeguard tower, Stevenson noticed kids riding rickety, often homemade, skateboards, and he had an epiphany, he later recalled. He knew he could engineer a better skateboard and, as publisher of Surf Guide, used the magazine to link the wheeled pastime to the exploding surf scene.”

In 1965, theAmerican Medical Assn.labeled skateboards “a new medical menace.” A variety of skateboards had flooded the market and riders were increasingly injured. Safety experts urged stores not to sell skateboards and advised parents not to buy them.

The fad died as quickly as it began, as did sales for Makaha.

“One week I was getting so many orders, people were leaving them on my doorstep. … The next, I was getting 75,000 cancellations in a single day!” Stevenson recalled in “The Skateboarder’s Bible” (1976).

He shut down the factory in 1966 and returned to his lifeguard chair, but he continued to ponder building a better skateboard.”
