A well marked sign indicates this is not a well-marked and a non-maintained trail, but with a bit of caution and trail info, I managed my way along the creek to find the waterfall. What was amazing among the beauty of the entire hike, was that I found a couple of goldfish swimming at the base of the waterfall and a few prehistoric looking creatures. See the CREATURE video below and also the WATERFALL video.

CREATURE

WATERFALL

Ok, so maybe they were just salamanders, :•) but it was a great hike and a fun find. So which one of you hikers planted those gold-fish in there? If you want to see more video… check out this from another hiker who went up when the water was really running.

If someone told me there were waterfalls in our dry, scrub-brush local mountains, I wouldn’t believe ‘em. But, it’s true! During this time of year there is dense, lush vegetation, flowing rivers, and even waterfalls. You may recall my previous post on a similar hike in Temescal, where I was awakened to the winter months’ affect on our Santa Monica mtns right here in our own backyard.

I have been exploring and truly enjoying some wonderful hikes, which for some – these mountain trails are old news. For others, (like me) it is a region of the Westside they have not yet discovered. This past weekend, I woke up early and headed out to Will Rogers, where I picked up the trailhead to Rustic Canyon.

Now please know that this trail is NOT well marked, not maintained and is full of poison oak/ivy, it is also noted for snakes, mountain lions and is a trail that can get a bit hairy if you’re not careful. People do get lost here… so please do your research. Also, understand that this roughly 2.5 mile trail (5 roundtrip), follows the river-bed, so when there is water flowing… you’re going to be hiking through the water. Do not go when it’s raining, or immediately after a rain, as flooding can be an issue.

I had a great hike along Rustic Canyon toward Camp Josepho and then I headed over to the Back Bone trail which took me back to Will Rogers. All together about a 3 hour hike, taking my time, and some photos along the way. The highlight was probably the fantastic waterfall I cam across. Check out some of my photos and a short video I shot as well. Here is another video close up.

This year, I am helping save lives from cancer by taking part in the American Cancer Society Relay For Life®, and I’m hoping you will support me. Each of us has our own reasons for caring about the fight against cancer, and I hope you’ll choose to make a difference by making a donation online to support my efforts. Or join our team, Beethoven Bears.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life® is a life-changing event that gives people a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Relay For Life® helps raise much-needed funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save lives from cancer. Every donation really does make a difference, and helps the American Cancer Society save lives every day by helping people stay well and get well, finding cures, and fighting back.

Today, I headed to Temescal Canyon. Turning up into Temescal off of PCH, I was anticipating the potential sight of an actual “WATERFALL” at the trail’s bridge where I had never really seen one before. Oh yes, the bridge and trails all say “waterfall” but I have only seen water – trickle. Today would be different!

This is a trail I have been on several times, the short trip (1 mile (2/roundtrip) to the bridge and on the longer trail that takes you a bit further around (4.4 mi). There is also the leg that takes you up to skull rock.

With the rain that we had received and the rain that was still looming in the distance, scheduled to arrive in the afternoon, I had a wonderful few hours of clearing with no significant participation coming down. My hike began as I came across just a few other hikers at the entrance, but that was about it. The park was quiet otherwise, and there was water. LOTS OF IT!

Conditions as they were, it made this a bit of a unique hike, and and not a hike I would recommend unless you have some trail experience. I was prepped with boots, backpack and drinking water. However, it was only a few hundred yards into the walk when I came across the trail completely washed out. There was truly no-way around, and at this point a hiker coming the other direction informed me that there was about 100 yards or so of wading through water but after that it was fine.

I am a BIG believer of the “safety – first” rule, so I was determined to proceed only if it was safe to do so. I did proceed and waded through some water… at a section where it was about knee deep, but not rushing at all. Muddy, mucky mess, but I loved it.

I continued along and re-connected with the trail, where I stopped several times in awe of the amazing rush of water in the canyon itself and the richness of green foliage that surrounded me. I took several photos, and made my way up to the bridge to see if in fact, there would be a waterfall.

Please take a minute to check out this small, brief video I captured as well. VIDEO: Temescal Canyon In addition to the video, I am sharing numerous photos in the post, because they tell the story much better than words.
Temescal Canyon Park and the trails are so close to us on the Westside… if you haven’t taken this hike (kid friendly) you must! Be sure to read parking signs, stop to read the information signs and look for the park officers, who are happy to visit with you and answer any questions you may have. The also have park programs you can participate in.

There were some road closures over the weekend due to the rain fall. See this recent post

I am sitting here with the beginnings of a blister on my right foot, my legs are bit sore, and I have an exhaustion I haven’t felt in a while… BUT I love it all. Why?… because the other day (on a Saturday) I woke up early, headed up to Will Rogers State Park and went for a hike. Not just any hike. I started my day by heading up to Inspiration Point, which if you haven’t done – you must! I have made this hike numerous times with my family… an easy and enjoyable time for all.

But this day, I was going much further, I have done major (all day) hikes before so this was going to add to my experience – and boy did it! Although on my own… I recommend (as does the Park Service) going with a partner or a group for safety/security. There is a sign that suggests making noise as you hike to warn wildlife that you are coming – you don’t want to surprise them. I actually sang “do wa diddy” along the way, which was a bit uncomfortable when I met an oncoming jogger on the trail. :•)

Prior to my hike, I read about the trails in the Santa Monica Mountains, and am astonished at this absolutely beautiful terrain in our backyard. This east/west range is quite a gift to those of us on the Westside. A few minutes from home and you are in the great outdoors. The trek that I went on was about a 6.5 mile (13 round trip) portion of the unique Back Bone Trail. The entire trail travels roughly 60 miles along the Santa Monica Mountains from Will Rogers State Historic Park to Point Mugu.

While on my hike, just past Will Rogers, I came across a gorgeous view from the “bridge”. Continuing onward (and upward – I met add) I met a jogger, a hiker/backpacker and a mountain biker all before 9am. I stopped along the way to take in the views of downtown Los Angeles, the Getty Museum, the snow on the San Gabriel Mtns in the distance and also the flowers and berries and natural world that was just inches from every step. I also saw 5 small rabbits along the way. Tried to snap a photo – but they’re just to fast.

Traveling with a backpack of water, fruit, camera and trail map, I also met a team of amazing volunteers (Sierra club and others) working on trail maintenance. The views along the way are hard to explain with a few words or a photo. A large flat screen TV of this hike still would not share with you the 360 degree experience of sites, sounds and smells of this terrain. This time of year (winter months) are fantastic! The crowds seem less, the temperature is cooler, the terrain is varied from dry brush to lush green.

Please go explore, but do so with safety and knowledge. The info here is a bit out of date… but is a great place to learn more and contact those that know before you go.

Enjoy!
