Del Rey residents are raising concerns about a proposed development at the site of the late Rev. O.C. Smith’s Del Rey church. A Texas developer is proposing to tear down the church and replace it with a large 216-unit apartment complex and multilevel parking structure on the five-acre site north of Jefferson Blvd and West of Centinela Avenue.
The LA County Regional Planning Commission will hear the proposal on July 14 and consider a a zoning change to accommodate the high density residential project.
Residents and neighboring property owners have gathered 200 signatures on a petition that calls for the building to be scaled down to meet the current land-use guidelines. LA City Councilman Bill Rosendahl has sent the LA County planners a letter saying he was against the zoning change.
City of Angels held services at the sanctuary for a few years following the 2001 death of the Rev. O.C. Smith, who sang as Count Basie’s vocalist and won a Grammy in 1968 for his version of Bobby Russell’s “Little Green Apples.”
