Disturbing New Report Finds Large Nuclear Risk At San Onofre

www.huffingtonpost.com - A new report claims that Southern California Edison misled federal regulators about equipment and design changes at the San Onofre nuclear power plant that are the likely cause of extensive wear on tubing that carries radioactive water. A series of untested equipment and design changes to the massive generators "created a large risk of tube failure at the San Onofre reactors," the report concluded. Following a radiation leak in January, tests found that seven tubes that carry radioactive water from the reactor were in danger of rupturing under high pressure in Unit 3.

LA Basin May Face Summer Power Shortages

Unit 3 of the plant south of San Clemente has been shut down since Jan. 31, after station operators detected a leak in one of its steam generator tubes. Unit 2 was taken down for planned maintenance Jan. 9. Technical studies show very tight reserve margins for San Diego and the Los Angeles Basin, especially during potential summer heat waves.
