Santa Monica has adopted a Sustainability Bill of Rights this week in an effort to protect cleaner air, energy, and water; limit the effect of fossil fuel emissions on the climate; and create a more sustainable food system. The City Council approved a resolution recognizing the rights of people, natural communities, and ecosystems to exist, regenerate, and flourish. The Sustainability Bil of Rights was drafted by the Santa Monica Task Force on the Environment, which hopes the document will help other communities shift the mindset away from the way we currently define land use.
