Breaking News: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will leave London for Dubai today | UAE President thumbnail

DUBAI: United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has died, state news agency WAM reported on Friday.

“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs condoles with the people of UAE, the Arab, Islamic nation, and the world over His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s death, the president of UAE,” read a Wam statement.

Following his demise, the UAE government announced three days of public holiday and 40 days of mourning.

Sheikh Khalifa was born in 1948 to Sheikh Zayed, the UAE’s founder father. He began his official duties in 1966. He then went on to lead the country until November 3, 2004,.

Sheikh Khalifa was the second president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the 16th Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven Emirates which comprise the UAE.

Sheikh Khalifa, whose full name was Khalifa Bin Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed al Khalifa shakhbout bin Theyab be Issa bin Nahyan falah bin Yas, was the eldest son to Sheikh Zayed.

Sheikh Khalifa has been married to Sheikha Shamsa Bint Suhail Al Mazrouei. Together they have eight children, two sons and six girls — plus he has many grandchildren.

After the death of his father and his accession as the president of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa initiated an initiative to develop the nomination system for members Federal National Council. This was seen by many as the first step towards the establishment direct elections in UAE.

Sheikh Khalifa was known for being an excellent listener, humble, affable, and interested in his people. He also conducted direct outreach via official missions. He was a respected and loved figure.

Former president enjoyed many hobbies, including falconry and fishing, which he learned from his father, Sheikh Zayed.
Condolences pour in

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif responded that he was very sad to learn about Sheikh Khalifa’s passing.

The prime minister stated that “UAE has lost an inspirational leader and Pakistan a great friend.”

“We offer our deepest condolences and sympathies for the UAE government and people. May Allah rest his soul in peace!” He added.

All ranks of the Pakistan Army, including Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa, expressed deep condolences on the sad passing of the President of the UAE
“Pakistan has lost an important friend. “May Allah Almighty bless his soul and give strength to the family that has lost him, Ameen,” the COAS said.

Raja Pervez Ashraf, Speaker of National Assembly, expressed deep sorrow over the death of the president.

He asked Allah to grant eternal rest to the soul of the deceased and for the UAE people to be strong enough to bear the loss.

Aseefa Bhutto–Zardari, Bilawal Bhutto–Zardari’s sister, offered her heartfelt condolences for the family of Sheikh Khalifa as well as the people of UAE.

“I will always remember him because of the kindness and friendship he showed to my family. A true friend of Pakistan, his support was always there for the country when it needed him,” Aseefa stated.

She said that the people of Pakistan grieve his loss and share in our grief as Emirati sisters and brothers.
