Just before his army invaded Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined his motivations in a speech.
His main argument was NATO’s eastward expansion.
He blamed Russia for the expansion of the military alliance closer to Russia’s border and accused Western leaders with breaking their promises not to do so.
Experts disagree about whether this is true.
